Utah’s premier daily newspaper, and Pulitzer prize winning source of journalism, gets a rethink.


In a sea of “fake news”, it’s an honor when your local newspaper known for it’s forward thinking journalistic integrity asks you to help them and their community. WLS concepted and designed a versatile grid system and digital rebrand while also engineering an entirely new front end to be implemented into Jeff Bezos’s new publishing product Arc run by the Washington Post.

Moving Modular. Creating a dynamic grid that works on all devices is status quo these days but doing it for a news agency, tied to an advertising model and future proofing their mobile solutions holds unique challenges. With a mobile first approach and a strong focus on content readability we re-invigorated the staid industry with a design that provided powerful imagery , layout flexibility, and solved for hundreds of content options with the ability for a unique daily design.

Journalism meets advertising. WLS consulted to ensure that the advertising platforms responsible for much of the Tribune’s ad revenue continue to generate income while preserving a journalism-first approach. Through testing and optimization and the support of the ARC platform we dramatically improved page load times, and overall site performance.
